In an era where designers and artists are moving towards modernism and minimalism, an organization is working with artisans and is committed to reviving history and culture back into living spaces with art and vintage illuminating décor. At the forefront of this movement is Fos Lighting, a seventy-year-old décor lighting brand that preserves rare Indian art forms from the past and gives them new shapes to align with the modern concepts of contemporary spaces.

Initiating its journey as Orient Electric House, the oldest lighting store in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, Fos Lighting has seen the fast-paced modern world but never loosened its roots with history, Indian art, and hand artistry. Each fixture is a tribute to the timeless craftsmanship passed down through generations, which the brand proudly calls ‘Parampara’, and meticulously blends into its variants of interiors. This Parampara still exists because the art forms are taken from the ancestors without much changes and self-interpretations, thus preserving the originality and beauty that has mesmerized the ancient and modern buyers.

Our process starts with visualizing and sketching unique lighting fixtures, most of which amalgamate Indian art forms – kaarigari, embroidery, brass work, navkaashi, Warli art, and more in production. These art forms are slowly diminishing and Fos is committed to keeping them alive through their products and vision. It is not only generating employment in rural India but also reviving the old forms and enabling a dignified livelihood for thousands of artisans.

Fos Lighting is the only brand in India to introduce embroidery in chandeliers and has been carrying forward this legacy with boldness. Islamic architecture invaded Gujarat and gave life to jali art, an art form with creative hollow spaces that let the light enter the indoors beautifully. An example of this most celebrated art form is found in wall lights by Fos Lighting, which looks their best when all other lights are shut and only turned on, grabbing the attention they deserve. The artists use both glossy jewels and fine brass work to give justice to the jali art, which displays their patterns and shadows on the wall they are placed on.

Speaking of brass, many of the brand’s popular products use brass as their primary material for handcrafting lights, which are often seen in the grandeur built of the chandeliers that sometimes give the palatial feel while at other times they imbibe colorful motifs and intricate patterns that define the Warli art. The Parisian Distressed Chandelier is ideated on the concept of this Warli art but with a more cheerful and linear approach. It is well embroidered and hand-finished, a perfect marriage of weavers and artisans.

As Fos Lighting continues to expand, the brand is making waves not just in India but on the global stage as well. Kunal, Co-Founder of Fos Lighting and visionary behind the brand, shares his thoughts on this exciting journey – “Our goal has always been to take the beauty of Indian craftsmanship to the world. We’re not just selling lights; we’re sharing stories, traditions, and a piece of our heritage with every design; and are proud to be taking Indian craftsmanship to international markets. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see our lights in homes and establishments around the world, knowing that they bring a bit of Indian heritage to those who appreciate both the beauty of the past and the possibilities of the future.”

Fos Lighting is proliferating because of its ability to bring history to life in a way that feels fresh and relevant. As they continue to innovate and expand, the brand remains committed to preserving the rich legacy of Indian art and craftsmanship. Whether it’s through a grand chandelier that becomes the centerpiece of a room or a delicately crafted pendant light that adds warmth and character, Fos Lighting is proving that vintage design is not just a trend—it’s a timeless expression of beauty that will continue to illuminate homes for years to come.
