Fatal traffic accident in Western District

     Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident happened in Western District this morning (August 15) in which a girl died.

     At 10.40am, a tram driven by a 48-year-old man was travelling along the east bound of Praya Kennedy Town. When approaching the pedestrian crossing near Des Voeux Road West, it reportedly knocked down a 66-year-old man, two girls aged 3 and 6 respectively, and a 34-year-old foreign woman, who were crossing the road.

     The 3-year-old girl was trapped under the tram and subsequently rescued. Sustaining multiple injuries, she was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in unconscious state and was certified dead at 12.26pm. The 66-year-old man sustained multiple injuries, the 6-year-old girl sustained head injuries and the 34-year-old woman sustained leg injuries. They were sent to Queen Mary Hospital in conscious state.

     The driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained for enquiries.

     Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Hong Kong Island is underway.
