TORONTO – WEBWIRE –

Announced earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled nominations for the 96th Academy Awards. TIFF congratulates films from its Official Selection, including American Fiction, The Boy and the Heron, Rustin, The Holdovers, The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days, The Teachers Lounge, Robot Dreams, Four Daughters and To Kill a Tiger, which together received a total of 29 nominations. A lineup of this years Oscar-nominated films will be screening at TIFF Lightbox as well as across the country as part of TIFFs Film Circuit programme in the coming months.

TIFF serves as an essential launchpad for films, and our Peoples Choice Award winners, in particular, have demonstrated a remarkable track record of setting the stage for success during awards season, said Cameron Bailey, TIFF, CEO. Our expansive and diverse audience, coupled with TIFFs commitment to showcasing innovative and impactful cinema, makes TIFF an unmatched platform for films to garner acclaim and gain widespread recognition. We are proud of and grateful to our Toronto audiences for discovering these films first.

Over the years, numerous TIFF Peoples Choice Award winners have gone on to secure Oscar nominations, with the Festivals ability to spot and celebrate cinematic excellence serving as a reliable bellwether of future acclaim on the global stage. TIFF 2023 Peoples Choice Awardwinning film American Fiction, from Cord Jefferson, received five nominations for his debut feature, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor (Jeffrey Wright), Best Supporting Actor (Sterling K. Brown), and Best Film Editing. The Peoples Choice Award, determined by audience votes, reflects the collective appreciation of film enthusiasts, often signalling a films broad appeal.

TIFF 2023 Tribute Performer Award honouree Colman Domingo received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in George C. Wolfes Rustin. Previous TIFF Tribute Performer honourees who were nominated and went on to win Oscars include Brendan Fraser, Jessica Chastain, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Joaquin Phoenix.

Alexander Paynes The Holdovers, nominated for five Oscars, sold at TIFF 2022 to Focus Features and returned to TIFF in 2023 for its International Premiere. Audiences can catch a special screening at TIFF Lightbox on February 29.

In addition, Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, who debuted the National Film Board documentary To Kill a Tiger during TIFF 22, received a nomination for Best Feature Documentary. The film will be screened on February 13, free to the public, as part of the See the North series, presented by MUBI.
