New Year’s Resolution: Intermountain Health Suggests ‘Way to Wellness’ in 2024

Intermountain’s Way to Wellness program focuses on setting smaller goals and building on them over time rather setting one large goal which can be hard to achieve.

If you’re like most Americans, your New Year’s resolution involves improving fitness, diet, or losing weight. And, too often, the health resolutions go by the wayside.

But Intermountain Health has a support team to help you stick to your goals to become healthier in 2024. The Way to Wellness program – formerly known as Weigh to Health – offers one-on-one support, group discussions and classes, from cooking to fitness to stress management, to help you achieve your health goals.

“With the start of a new year comes the opportunity to reflect on personal goals and making new commitments. But when we aim too high, the effort often ends in disappointment,” said Carly Alba, registered dietitian nutritionist with Intermountain Health. “It doesn’t have to be like that. Way to Wellness can help with setting smaller health goals that you can build on over time and achieve success. It’s fun, supportive, educational – and often, covered by insurance.”

A survey by Forbes Health found that Americans’ top 2024 New Year’s resolutions involved improved fitness, improved diet, and/or weight loss. The survey also found that the average resolution lasts less than four months – possibly due to a lack of tools or support.

Setting smaller goals and building on them over time typically results in greater success compared to setting one very large and ambitious goal. This is a tenet of Intermountain’s Way to Wellness program.

Way to Wellness is a CDC-recognized diabetes prevention program for adults who want to lose weight, improve nutrition and wellness, increase physical activity, and address health concerns such as prediabetes.

The program consists of a full year of group discussion and education classes facilitated by a registered dietitian nutritionist, including one-on-one sessions. It is offered at multiple Intermountain hospital locations and virtually.

Group classes cover a variety of topics, including:

  • Principles of healthy eating
  • Diabetes prevention
  • Grocery shopping
  • Healthy cooking
  • Exercise and fitness
  • Behavior change
  • Menu planning
  • Eating out and special occasions
  • Weight maintenance
  • Stress management
  • Emotional eating
  • Body image
  • Intuitive eating

“Way to Wellness equips participants with the knowledge, support, and accountability needed to be successful with both short-term and long-term goals,” Alba said.
