Competitive figure skater turned author, Kerry Novick, has ventured into the world of fiction with her debut novel, Svetlanas Ring. In this enchanting coming-of-age story, she draws from her personal experiences as a figure skater to deliver a narrative that seamlessly blends sport with a touch of magic.

Her journey from a competitive figure skater to a seasoned professional with a successful career in childrens television sets the stage for the unique perspective she brings to Svetlanas Ring. The novel revolves around Brianna Nolan, a 14-year-old figure skater facing challenges that threaten to shatter her dreams of success. Inspired by her disappointments as a young skater, Novick creates a tale that explores the difficulties of the sport, the struggles of adolescence, and the mysterious powers of a ring that changes Briannas destiny.

The heart of the story lies in Briannas journey as she deals with the hurdles of puberty, fears of falling, and the unexpected twist that occurs when her father gifts her a ring once worn by Russian Champion Svetlana Terasova. The ring becomes a conduit to Svetlanas life, with Brianna experiencing flashes of the champions past in her dreams and on the ice. Novick skillfully explores the metamorphic power of the ring and its impact on Briannas skating career, as she somehow taps into Svetlanas fearlessness in the face of fast and difficult jumps. With this new confidence, the fear that held her back is gone.

Svetlanas Ring not only captures the technical nuances of figure skating but also looks into the emotional and social aspects of a young athletes life. The author skillfully portrays Briannas struggle to balance her newfound social life with the demands of her skating coach. The sacrifices Brianna makes lead her to a realization about the sacrifices Svetlana was forced to make back in Russia during the cold war. Brianna comes to realize that Svetlana was forced to end her career due to government interference, while for Brianna, the only thing standing in the way of her success is herself.

With this realization comes power and clarity of purpose, but also the hard truth about how much Brianna must give up in her personal life to make it to the top. Both young athletes and those who enjoy stories of courage will connect with Briannas struggles and be inspired by her determination to become a champion.

Readers are invited to experience the magic of Svetlanas Ring and also discover some of the sports important history. Most importantly, it reveals how fear holds us back. What could you accomplish if fear no longer stood in your way?

About the Author

As a competitive figure skater in her pre-teen and teen years, Kerry (McIntyre) Novick was surprised that there were so few novels about competitive figure skaters, and those that she found appeared to written by authors who had never skated competitively. She set out to change that. After high school, Novick turned professional and toured with Ice Follies & Holiday On Ice Combined Shows, Holiday On Ice Europe, and Disney On Ice. After a six-month engagement with an ice show in Japan, she went on to receive a degree in Japanese Language and Literature from the University of Massachusetts and a Master of Arts in East Asian Studies from Cornell University. She took writing courses throughout college and later at Gotham Writers Workshop in New York City, always with an eye to becoming an author. She went on to have a 25-year career in the distribution and development of childrens television programs, where she honed in on the art of storytelling for children and young adults. Svetlanas Ring is her first novel.
