The Death Flyer recounts the story of a surveyor, lost in the woods of northern Maine, who ends up riding a train that crashed ten years ago.
Stories of ghost trains have haunted the American imagination for more than 150 years, said Lisa Mansell from the Church of Scientologys Public Affairs Department. Urban legend has it that Abraham Lincolns funeral train resurrects the Presidents final journey from Washington DC to Springfield, Illinois every year around the anniversary of his death. Stories of ghost trains can be found throughout the world. Though some have tried to debunk the stories as the reflection of car lights or other phenomenon, it doesnt stop the stories from spreading.
Members of the L. Ron Hubbard East Coast Theatre performed the story as an old-time radio play, including sound effects, an on air light, and commercial breaks.
Id never seen a story depicted like a radio show along with the visuals of the actors as well, said one guest. It was one-of-a-kind. To see the actors really getting into character and watching them do what they do to make the proper sounds for everything its just stunning.
The Death Flyer was originally published in 1936, said Joanie Sigal, the Theatres Director. It was just one of the more than 200 stories written by L. Ron Hubbard for the pulp fiction magazines of the era. The sales of these stories funded Mr. Hubbards research in the mind and life culminating in what would become Dianetics and Scientology.
Halloween is a billion-dollar industry in the United States, said Ms. Mansell. But the holiday still has the ability to capture the imaginations of millions and the works of L. Ron Hubbard are an excellent way to reconnect with a simpler time in our past.
L. Ron Hubbard was among the most prolific and popular writers of the 20th century. Between 1934 and 1950, more than 200 of L. Ron Hubbard’s tales appeared in the pages of pulp magazinesas many as three titles an issue and bylined under some fifteen pen names.
