The said book, about the author’s grandson, is the first in a planned three-part series.

It is important that parents teach their children about autism at an early age. However, many parents find it very difficult to understand autism, let alone explain it to their children. What if children’s books, such as I Think Differently: My Family’s Journey with Autism (Independently published; 2022) by Kylen S. Barron, both adults and children learn more about autism and neurodiversity?

I Think Differently dazzles as a charming storybook with colorful, full-page illustrations and endearing narrative told in the first person. The illustrated children’s book tells the story of Anthony, who is born to a lovely couple; he is born, as his Mom-mom describes, “perfect in every way.” The book takes the reader on Anthony’s and his family’s heartwarming journey to understanding and living with autism.

“This book is about my 13-year-old grandson who is one of the many loves of my life,” said the author in an interview with Jukebox Mind. “Not knowing about autism and how it would affect his ability to process his thoughts, leaving him unable to verbalize his thoughts, I would become his number one advocate as he grew, pushing for answers and solutions.”

It is important that children – especially children with autism – learn from a young age what autism and neurodiversity mean. They could do this by reading stories about a child, sibling, friend, and classmate with autism. Children’s books such as I Think Differently can act as an outlet and a learning tool for children with autism to recognize their unique place in the world and understand they are not alone in their journey. I Think Differently does a great job in explaining and representing autism in a positive and fun way that children and their parents will enjoy.

The other two books for this series are:

  1. I Think Differently: What I Speak Matters
  2. I Think Differently: I am me I Am Proud To Be Me
