A quote by author Marion C. Garretty goes like this, “A mother’s love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.” This quote is best applied to Kim Hopkins, a semi-retired nurse and author of the book “Shopping with a Schizophrenic” (LifeRich Publishing; 2019).

In “Shopping with a Schizophrenic,” the author shares her life and reflections as a mother to a son, who not only is subject to a mental illness but experiences the devastating effects of a brain surgery gone wrong. She talks about her son Cory, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 24 and underwent a subsequent brain surgery that went wrong.

Hopkins said: “Everyone’s story is unique. Mental illness can take many forms and how the family unit reacts to it determines the outcome that person may have. It is just a different way of living. There is no ‘normal.’ You can find humor in almost any situation.”

“Shopping with a Schizophrenic” has received positive reviews from readers. An Amazon customer Tami wrote: “It is an awesome read of honest emotions of a mother’s experience doing her best to care for her son with most difficult health challenges. It is honest, funny, heartbreaking, and inspirational.”

Another Amazon customer, Marcie Hixson, said: “It’s a first-person account and you get the whole feeling of what the family went through to help their beloved son. It’s a story of love, family, parenthood, friends, chronic illness, medical community, and a lifetime of dealing with them. The mother reveals the hardship, but still maintains a tremulous sense of humor.”
