Adjustment of chemical usage at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works

**************************************************************************

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) announced today (March 27) that it will start tomorrow (March 28) to adjust the dosage of sodium hypochlorite solution (referred to as bleach), a chemical used to control bacterial levels in the disinfection system of the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on freight, the supply of chemicals to the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works has recently been unstable. Therefore, the DSD needs to adjust the amount of bleach used by the sewage treatment works in a timely manner so as to make more effective use of the existing stock to maintain the sewage treatment service.

As part of the epidemic control measures, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has closed all the gazetted beaches under its management, including those in Tsuen Wan. Therefore, the above temporary operational arrangements will not pose additional health risks to the public. Nevertheless, the DSD, together with the Environmental Protection Department, will strengthen the monitoring of the water quality of nearby waters.
