Under this initiative, BP has launched a new Project called Project Akshar or Project Education. The project covers 1059 villages, leaving no school behind, and helps them provide primary education to the underprivileged students in these areas.
The students under this program learn how to read and write in their local language, basic mathematics, and arithmetic skills. Several government agencies, teachers, volunteers, parents, and over one lakh students are a part of this scheme.
The project Education started in Nandurbar in Maharashtra and Sagar in Madhya Pradesh in 2010. Over time the project has evolved into a mass movement, now covering over 1000 different villages. In its starting phases, the project was to help village students learn basic concepts. But now it helps them come to par with city students and others who have the means to get the best quality education. Over 1 lakh tribal students are benefited from this program yearly.
When the project had started, it had come to notice that most children living in villages didnt go to school. And out of those who did, most dropped out before even completing their primary education. Later found out that the reason for the drop-out was the different dialects used in school compared to the dialect used by these children in their day-to-day lives. That was causing a barrier for the children in comprehension, reading, and writing. To overcome this, the Read India project was launched to help students of classes 3 to 5 to help in basic reading and arithmetic skills.
The teachers who are a part of this program all have to undergo a training period to interact with the students and be able to overcome the language barrier and help the students without any problems or discrepancies.
Besides the Akshar Project, BPCL has launched other projects to help people across India get an education and become up to date with the requirements before taking a step towards jobs and other forms of employment.
These projects include:
· Quality Education Program
· Computer Aided Learning (CAL)- Digital Literacy Program
· Saksham Teachers Training Program
· Nirmaan Infrastructure Related Interventions
· Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Hostel Block for women
