Lou Dematteis has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Mr. Dematteis has found success as the owner of Dematteis Photography and Film since 1972. His area of expertise resides in documentary photography, photojournalism, and documentary and narrative filmmaking. Additionally, Mr. Dematteis has served as a professor of photojournalism at the City College of San Francisco for more than a decade and a half.
Throughout his career, Mr. Dematteis has worked internationally, covering issues of social, political and environmental importance. In 1985, he worked as a freelance photographer for Time and Newsweek magazines, based in Managua, Nicaragua. At the end of 1985, he was hired as a staff photographer by Reuters News Pictures and worked in Nicaragua during the height of the U.S.-backed Contra war. In 1986, his photographs of downed U.S. CIA contractor Eugene Hasenfus received international recognition, including a citation from World Press Photo and inclusion in The New York Times’ and National Press Photographers Association’s Pictures of the Year. During that time, he also worked in El Salvador, Cuba, Haiti and Panama.
Mr. Dematteis has worked in many other international locations including Italy, Russia, Ecuador, Vietnam and China. Having amassed a large archive of photographic work, he is actively marketing this work, some of which has been acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , the Smithsonian and other museums and universities. He has published four books of photography and exhibited his work around the world.
As a filmmaker, his award-winning documentaries and narrative features have been broadcast on PBS, streamed on the internet, and been shown at film festivals and in theaters internationally.
Mr. Dematteis was for many years a member of the National Press Photographers Association and he has provided photography and filmmaking services for various nonprofit organizations. Initially aspiring to follow in his father’s footsteps as a lawyer, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of San Francisco in 1970. Notably, Mr. Dematteis’ own daughter Gabriela has become a successful documentary filmmaker based in New York.
