John “Jack” R. Harrison Jr. has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Mr. Harrison enjoyed a fulfilling career in Visual Information that spanned more than three decades. Serving in many positions throughout this time, he contributed nearly 20 years of service to the Defense Mapping Agency, a subset of the Department of Defense that consolidated many military and defense organizations after the end of the Vietnam War. Some of the positions Mr. Harrison held at the Defense Mapping Agency include Chief of Visual Information, Chief of Audio-Visual Division and Supervising Visual Information Specialist.
From 1959 to 1961, Mr. Harrison served in the United States Army with the Military Police before returning to civilian life to complete his education. He first studied at the University of Maryland, where in 1962 he finished his undergraduate coursework with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (A Fine Art major in the College of Arts and Sciences). He would later study Law at the University of Baltimore from 1967 until 1969, but found a greater opportunity at the U.S. Government Printing Office as a Visual Information Specialist. Mr. Harrison concluded his education in 1984, whereupon he graduated with a Master of Science in Public Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C.
Well regarded for his indelible contributions to the field, Mr. Harrison has earned many accolades during his career. In 1988, 1995, and 1996, he was bestowed the Special Act Award from the Defense Mapping Agency. In 1976, he was also presented with the Nelson Rockefeller Vice Presidential Commendation and Appreciation Letter. Mr. Harrison’s achievements have largely been driven by his creative background, as his expertise allowed him to assist in many different projects throughout the years.
