The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the formation of a new government in Haiti:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Prime Minister Ariel Henry on forming a new government in Haiti.
“I encourage Prime Minister Henry to maintain an open dialogue with the Haitian people. I call on all stakeholders to get involved in restoring the functioning of state institutions and ensuring that an election is held by the end of the year.
“I also encourage Prime Minister Henry and his government to do everything possible to improve the living conditions of the Haitian people.
“As a long-standing partner, Canada is committed to increasing its assistance to the Haitian people. We remain committed to supporting Haiti towards a more democratic, secure and prosperous future.
“Canada and Haiti have long been united by a deep friendship, which is reinforced by a common language, the close ties between our peoples and a long history of cooperation. In Canada, the Haitian community helps make our neighbourhoods more vibrant and our communities more prosperous.”
