Dr. Andrews had always wanted to become a chemist, as his father was an esteemed agricultural and fertilizer chemist. Having been raised on the Mississippi State University (MSU) campus where his father worked as a research professor, he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering, with highest honors, from MSU in 1963. While completing his undergraduate coursework, he received the Hamilton Watch Award from Mississippi State University in 1963 for the most outstanding senior in engineering. Upon his graduation, Dr. Andrews was immediately appointed as an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia, with which he would remain for the duration of his career. He additionally established himself at the aforementioned university as an associate professor from 1970 to 1976 and a professor from 1976 to 2008. In 2008 Dr. Andrews was honored with the Distinguished Scientist Award and designated as a professor emeritus with the University of Virginia.
Dr. Andrews has published over 870 papers over the course of his professional career. He is incredibly proud of his paper on the production and characterization of dialane, which was published in Science. Notably, he served on the editorial board for the Journal of Molecular Structure in 1978 and as an editor for “Chemistry and Physics of Matrix Isolated Species” in 1989. In 2018, a piece titled “W. Lester S. Andrews Festschrift” was published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry A to pay tribute to Dr. Andrews’ significant scientific contributions.
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Andrews has developed successful new approaches for the laser ablation of metals, in turn, designing new ways of examining new compounds made with metal atoms. He was celebrated as a fellow in chemical engineering by MSU in 2002 and received an honorary doctorate from the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France in 2004. Dr. Andrews is also noted as a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society.
