Detroit, Michigan May 10, 2021 (Issuewire.com)  – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a proclamation officially designating May 11, 2021, as Women in Global Trade Day.

Spearheaded by Tonya McNeal-Weary, a Michigan-based entrepreneur and business owner, Women in Global Trade Day is a national campaign to promote gender equality in global trade and the impact of trade on women’s economic empowerment and the economy.

McNeal-Weary was inspired to launch the campaign to publicize the opportunities through which women can gain from global trade and leverage trade as a tool for the economic empowerment of women business owners in Michigan and globally.

“Although some progress is being made, women are still underrepresented in global trade,” said Tonya McNeal-Weary, Founder of IBS Global Consulting. “Women in Global Trade Day is an opportunity to engage the community in supporting and celebrating women exporters and their impact on Michigan’s economy,” said McNeal-Weary.

For over a decade, McNeal-Weary has been helping small businesses connect to global markets. Her company, IBS Global Consulting, specializes in helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) expand into new markets.

As a global champion for women’s economic empowerment, McNeal-Weary founded the Michigan Association for Female Entrepreneurs (MAFE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting, promoting, and empowering female entrepreneurs in Michigan. In 2020, McNeal-Weary launched the Women Going Global Movement to help women overcome gender-specific barriers to doing business globally and inspire women-led SMEs to scale their businesses beyond their country’s borders.

McNeal-Weary believes that no one should be restricted from economic opportunities because of gender. Women in Global Trade Day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate women-led companies that are successfully exporting and bring awareness to the importance of making global trade more gender-inclusive.
