Performance of sportspersons in international events is dependent on the stage of development of sports in a country. Stage of development of sports in terms of sports infrastructure, training/coaching methods, sports science etc., in other countries such as United States of America, China, Japan, Australia is of different level.
Achievements of Indian sportspersons and teams in international sports events, including mega sports events, in recent past shows that there has been a perceptible improvement in performance of Indian sportspersons in international sports events.
The Central Government is playing a pivotal role for promoting high performance in sports. National Sports Federations are being encouraged and supported for attainment of their respective medium and long term plans. With the launch of Khelo India Scheme, there has been an increased awareness and participation in sports and Indian athletes have earned accolades in sports such as archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, hockey, shooting, wrestling, weightlifting, etc. in international events. Rs. 981.09 crore, Rs. 1229.32 crore, Rs. 1297.38 crore and Rs. 1583.83 crore have been spent by the Department of Sports in 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 and current financial year 2019-20 upto 31.01.2020 respectively. Details of funds sanctioned and expenditure incurred under Khelo India Scheme with respect to infrastructural development during the last three years and current year upto 31.01.2020, State /UT-wise are given in the Annexure.
