Every year, World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed globally on 31st May as a practice and the intention is to provide encouragement and motivation to abstain for 24 hours from all forms of tobacco consumption across the world. There are various educational institutions, companies and organizations who are observing this day as World No Tobacco Day.
The D Y Patil Dental School in Pune observed World No Tobacco Day at the Lohegaon bus stand premises on the theme “Tobacco and lung,” on May 31, with Dr. Anand Shigli, Dean, DYPDS and S K Dale Police Naik 2866 of Vimantal Police Station, Lohegaon Police Chowk as the special guest.
On this occasion, S K Dale in his short speech urged the public to stay away from all tobacco products as it leads to diseases affecting the heart and lungs and many types of cancer. He even mentioned that people should play an important role in tackling this tobacco menace for the health, prosperity and overall development of this nation.
There was also a demonstration given on “Indigenous method of quitting tobacco” by a Final Year BDS Student of DYPDS.
The discarding of bad habits among students and oath taking ceremony was initiated by the Dental School employees. The students also shouted and carried anti-tobacco slogans. The slogans of Ban tobacco; We don’t want tobacco; No room for tobacco in our life; Tobacco kills memory power; Raise the wall against tobacco; We want tobacco free Society created an impact.
The main objective of displaying a dummy during this event was to warn people about the consequences of consuming tobacco and how it will eventually lead to the loss of precious lives.
The event concluded with the students emphasizing on the importance of abstinence in terms of all bad habits and urged the people to help prevent their friends, parents, relatives and neighbors from consuming tobacco products. At the end of the function, the Faculty, students and the people present there witnessed the burning of the dummy at the local ground.
