New and upcoming airports of India

India is one of the fastest developing economies of the world. It boasts of some state of the art airports in its kitty while having some new and upcoming airports already in the pipeline. Government is planning to boost connectivity to tier 2 and tier 4 cities and at the same time ease existing traffic on popular airports. Civil Aviation Minister has recently highlighted their plan to bring about 100 new airports in the next 15 years with an estimated cost of about 4 lakh crores in their development. About 70 airports are being planned at new destinations where there is no airport as of now, while the remaining will be second airports in the same city or an expansion of present airfields which will handle commercial flights too.
These airports will be developed under the UDAN scheme aiming to bring about regional connectivity by offering required financial support and development of infrastructure. Some popular airports which are already under construction include Jewar Airport in Noida, Mopa in Goa and a second airport in Mumbai.

Jewar Airport – Uttar Pradesh

The airport is being constructed in Greater Noida and is expected to take down the load of Indira Gandhi International Airport. At the same time Jewar airport will also offer immense convenience to residents living in and around Noida at a distance of 60 kms from Delhi, the total cost of construction is expected to be about 20 crores and said to be developed in four phases. The airport is going to be built on a 5000-acre land, most of which has already been acquired.

Navi Mumbai International Airport

The second airport of Mumbai is already under construction and is being built at Ulve-Kopar Panvel in Mumbai. The airport is said to ease off the load from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and is going to be one of the first urban multi airport of India. The first phase of airport is expected to handle a lot of 10 million passengers every year and once expanded to its full capacity it will handle more than 60 million passengers per year. The airport is expected to be a sigh of relief for various business travellers who have their hotels and conferences in Navi Mumbai and have to waste a lot of time in traffic travelling from the single most airport to Navi Mumbai.

Mopa Airport – Goa

Another under construction project which is being built at Mopa in North Goa, the airport is being constructed using a special technology. The airport is being constructed with a budget of Rs. 3000 crores in total of four phases with the first phase expected to cost about 1500 crore. The construction of airport is in full construction and is said to be operating in the year 2019-20. Mopa airport is expected to handle more than four million passengers every year initially and over 13 million passengers by the end of fourth phase.

Itanagar Airport

Itanagar airport is another upcoming greenfield project that is being constructed at Holongi which is 14 kms away from Itanagar – the state capital of Arunachal Pradesh. Being built on ab area of over 320 hectares, there is going to be a 2300 metre runway, a 5100 square metre terminal building which will handle 200 passengers during peak hours along with provision of air traffic control tower, technical block as well as a fire station. It is also said to have a provision for commercial activities like hotels and restaurants.

Kannur International Airport

Kannur international airport is another recent international airport serving the Kannur district of Kerala. Spread across 2300 acre of land, it is located merely 25 kms towards east of Kerala city. The airport has been operational since December 2018 and serves more than a million passengers annually.

Durgapur Airport – Kolkata

Kolkata is a major city of India which is in a dire need of second airport. The second airport, hence, has been suggested at Durgapur which is in South of Bengal. The airport construction is still under the final stage but it is surely expected to give a sigh of relief to many leisure as well as corporate travellers in Kolkata.
