Nadal lifts Wimbledon title, downs Federer in a thriller

Nadal sailed past Federer in the first two sets in a keenly contested final. Federer played well but committed over 25 unforced errors in the first two sets. He also failed to win more than one of the 12 break points that he won with a winning percentage of just 8%. Nadal converted 3 of 7 points that he won.

Nadal won first two sets with identical scores of 6-4, 6-4.

It was 2-0 to Nadal and 5-4 with Nadal to serve in the third set when the rain stopped play. The Swiss champion needed just the break at that time to re-orient himself to the final.

He came ahead fighting and won the third set in a tie-break at 7-5. The fourth set also saw a tie-break and Nadal having a chance to win the championship when he was serving 8-7 in the fourth set tie-break.

However, the champion came from behind and won the tie-break 10-8.

Both the players held on to their serves in the last two sets. Federer blasted 16 aces past Nadal.

Both players are battling it out in the finals with two sets a piece. They are comparitively fresh in the long final. Nearly an hour's break doing a world of good to specially Federer.

Federer served first in the final set. It could be anyone's game.

At the end of four games, both players managed to hang on. In the fifth game Federer was serving at deuce with the score of 2-2 when rain stopped play again.

Both players then held on to their serve and the scores were level at 7-7. Federer's ace tally stood at 25 but his 51 unforced errors made a difference in the match.

Being the last set, there is no tie-breaker. Both men had to fight it out till someone breaks.

Nadal was able to break Federer in the 15th game of the set. It was 8-7 in favour of Nadal and he had to hold his serve to win the match.

He held it successfully and lifted the coveted Wimbledon Men's Singles title!
